大分县· Yufuin

Yufuin is a hot-spring town in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, set on a plateau of 400–500 m beneath the twin-peaked active volcano Mt. Yufu (1,583 m). Since 1995, a community-led development movement (initiated by figures like Kentaro Nakaya) has restricted hotel construction and signage, growing Yufuin into one of Japan's most refined hot-spring towns. At its heart, Lake Kinrin — a rare pond where hot springs mix with cold water — is famous for the autumn-to-winter dawn mist born of the temperature gap. With 852 sources (Japan's second-most), Yufuin is a graceful onsen popular especially with women travelers.

快速问答

What is Yufuin?
A hot-spring town in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, on a 400–500 m plateau beneath Mt. Yufu (1,583 m). Since 1995, regulated community-led development has shaped one of Japan's most refined onsen towns. With 852 sources (Japan's second-most) and the famous Lake Kinrin morning mist, it is especially popular with women travelers.
Conditions for morning mist at Lake Kinrin?
Clear mornings November to March with temperatures below 5 °C. The thermal gap between hot-spring water and air creates the mist, densest from just before sunrise to one hour after. From the lakeside foot bath you can see steam and mist rising in double layers — pure fantasy.
How does Yufuin differ from Beppu?
Beppu impresses with sheer onsen volume and the dramatic Hells; Yufuin offers quiet, highland refinement. About 1 hour by car from Beppu, near Yufuin IC. You can visit both in a single day, but staying overnight in Yufuin is ideal to capture the night and morning mist.
Access?
From JR Kyudai Main Line «Yufuin» Station, the town center is walkable. The Limited Express «Yufuin no Mori» (Hakata–Yufuin, ~2 hr 20 min) is popular as a sightseeing train. From Fukuoka Airport, ~1 hr 50 min by car. From Beppu, 1 hr by car. With a rental car, pair with a Mt. Yufu drive.
Recommended ryokan?
Luxury: Kamenoi Bessou, Tama-no-Yu, Murata (the «Big Three of Yufuin,» ¥50,000–100,000/night). Mid-range: Kokuchi, Yufuin Hanayoshi (¥20,000–30,000). Budget: Yufuin Ryotei Ikkoten (¥15,000). Day-bath access ¥1,500–2,000 — you can crawl multiple ryokan. Yufuin's signature is unpretentious refinement and dining quality.
Yunotsubo-kaido gourmet?
①Village Cerisier (pudding specialist) ②B-Speak (roll cakes) ③Kinsho Korokke (croquettes) ④Theomurata (chocolate) ⑤Mitsubachi (honey) ⑥Toriten (local-chicken tempura). All walkable, perfect for a photography-and-snacking onsen-town stroll.
