Okinawa
Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture (population 1.45 million), comprising 47 inhabited subtropical islands. Independent as the «Ryukyu Kingdom» (1429–1879), it traded with China and Southeast Asia, developing a culture distinct from mainland Japan. Emerald seas, coral reefs, and white-sand beaches yield landscapes that do not look Japanese. The mainland's UNESCO Shurijo Castle ruins (rebuilding after the 2019 fire), Miyakojima's water (among the world's clearest), the untouched nature of the Yaeyama Islands, and the «Kerama Blue» of the Kerama Islands all let you photograph the tropics within Japan's borders.

快速问答
What is Okinawa Prefecture?
Japan's southernmost subtropical prefecture, made up of 47 inhabited islands. Independent as the «Ryukyu Kingdom» from 1429 to 1879, it developed a distinct culture and offers emerald seas, coral reefs, and white sand entirely unlike mainland Japan.
Best season for Miyakojima?
May to September for water clarity (especially July–August). September is typhoon season — watch warnings. December to February is cool and uncrowded but with limited marine activities. October and April (around the end of the rainy season) avoid crowds best.
Best time of day for clear sea shots?
10 AM to 2 PM, when the sun is high and light penetrates to the seabed, produces the strongest emerald green. A polarizing filter is essential to reduce surface glare. Clear skies are required — overcast skies severely flatten the blue.
