Bibai is a city of about 20,000 residents in the central Ishikari Plain, within the Sorachi General Subprefectural Bureau of Hokkaido. Once thriving on coal mining, today it pairs vast farmland with a distinctive art culture. Its centerpiece, Arte Piazza Bibai (opened 1992), is an outdoor sculpture park created by world-renowned Italian-Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda in his hometown — repurposing the former Sakae Elementary School, with about 40 white-marble works scattered across grasslands and snow fields. As one of the few places to see Yasuda's work outside lavender gardens, and with the Ishikari Plain's farmland, silos, cattle, and winter snow making for archetypal Hokkaido pastoral scenery, Bibai is a beloved photographic destination.

Arte Piazza is free, with personal photography allowed. Tripods OK with consideration during crowds — selfie sticks and drones forbidden. Don't touch, sit on, or climb the sculptures. Commercial use requires pre-approval. To capture pristine snow before footprints, head to «Piacenza Plaza» first thing in the morning.
Best season?
Winter (Jan–Feb), when white marble meets white snow against blue sky, is the most painterly. May–June fresh greens and October foliage offer different appeals. Summer pairs sculpture with green meadows and sunset skies. Post-rain stone texture is also distinctive — endless compositions across times and seasons.
Best Bibai Yakitori shops?
«Fukuyoshi,» «Mifune,» and «Bibai Yakitori Honten» are famed. Bibai-style alternates meat and offal on each skewer («animal-plant-animal-plant»), with a signature salt sauce.
