Tenku no Rakuen de Achi (estrellas)

Nagano· Achi Tenku no Rakuen Stargazing

«Tenku no Rakuen» (Paradise in the Sky) is the brand name for stargazing tours at Fujimidai Highlands (1,400 m) operated by Heavens Sonohara ski resort in Chisato, Achi Village, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture. In 2006, the area was certified by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as having the «most beautiful starry sky in Japan» (under the National Star-Sky Continuous Observation program). After about a 15-minute gondola ride, visitors reach the summit, where light pollution is eliminated and a 360° panorama of stars surrounds them. Depending on season, 6,000 to 10,000 stars are visible to the naked eye — the Milky Way at new moon, the Summer Triangle, Orion in winter, and the Winter Hexagon. Drawing about 140,000 visitors annually, it leads Japanese astrotourism.

Highlights

  • Night Tour — a 15-minute gondola ride to 1,400 m for stargazing, drawing about 140,000 visitors a year

  • Perseid Meteor Shower (August) — Japan's busiest meteor shower, the best stargazing timing of the year
  • Winter Constellations (November–February) — Orion, the Winter Hexagon, with the clearest air and exceptional transparency
  • Heavens Sonohara Ski Resort — ski runs in winter, star tours at night, mountain biking in summer — varied year-round

Quick Answers

What is «Paradise in the Sky»?
A stargazing tour brand operated by the Heavens Sonohara ski resort at the 1,400 m Fujimidai Highlands in Achi Village, Nagano. Certified in 2006 by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as the «most beautiful starry sky in Japan,» it draws about 140,000 visitors a year as Japan's leading astrotourism destination.
Best time of year for stargazing?
Around new moon. Winter (Nov–Feb) gives the sharpest stars (the Milky Way is fainter). Summer is best for the Milky Way's core (peaks around new moon in July–August). The Perseid meteor shower (August 12–13) is the year's busiest. Night tours require advance booking.
Access and tour reservations?
About 25 minutes by car from JR Iida Station; 5 minutes by car from the Sonohara Interchange of the Chuo Expressway. Reservations are required (¥2,500 for adults); tours run on selected dates April–October. Rain or fog cancels, with rescheduling available.
Recommended camera gear?
①Fast wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or faster, 14–24mm) ②High-ISO-tolerant body (clean ISO 3200–6400) ③Sturdy tripod ④Remote shutter (for 30+ second exposures) ⑤2–3 spare batteries (cold drains them fast) ⑥Red LED headlamp (preserves dark-adapted vision). For higher quality, a portable equatorial mount is excellent.
What does the tour include?
Mountain-base station to the summit station via the «Tenku Yuran Gondola» (about 15 min). Roughly 2-hour summit stay with a stargazing guide (planetarium-style narration), laser-pointer constellation tour, and a «lights-off moment» (5 minutes of complete darkness to see the stars). In winter, a «Winter Night Tour» substitutes snowfield illumination.
Cold-weather wear?
At 1,400 m, summer night temps run 10–15°C; winter drops below -10°C. Bring down jacket, thick fleece, waterproof boots, gloves, hat, and ear muffs. The summit is outdoor seated viewing — bring a blanket and warm drinks. Winter (Dec–Mar) requires snow boots; free blanket loans are available.
