Shiretoko

Hokkaido

Shiretoko is a peninsula about 65 km long in eastern Hokkaido, between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Nemuro Strait, registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2005. The name derives from the Ainu «Sir-etok» («the end of the earth»), and it lives up to that meaning: primeval forests, drift ice, sheer cliffs, waterfalls, brown bears, and Blakiston's fish owls combine in the most southerly extent of the Northern Hemisphere's drift ice and one of the world's densest brown bear habitats. Winter offers drift-ice walks; summer reveals the Shiretoko Five Lakes and cliff coastlines visible only from sightseeing boats; Cape Shiretoko itself remains unreachable by road — a final pilgrimage for photographers seeking edge-of-the-earth landscapes.

Highlights

  • Shiretoko Five Lakes — five lakes ringed by primeval forest; raised boardwalks let you walk safely above bear country, with the Shiretoko range reflected in calm water
  • Sea of Okhotsk drift ice — late January to early March, the most southerly drift-ice zone in the world; «drift-ice walks» let you stand on it
  • Kamuiwakka Falls — a rare waterfall fed by hot springs; in summer, hike upstream to the fourth fall
  • Cape Puyuni and Yuhi-dai — five minutes by car from Utoro; sunset over the Sea of Okhotsk silhouettes the cape
  • Sightseeing boats — from Utoro Port to Cape Shiretoko, viewing cliffs, waterfalls, and brown bears on a 3.5-hour cruise

Quick Answers

What is Shiretoko?
A 65 km peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2005. From the Ainu for «end of the earth,» it combines drift ice, primeval forest, brown bears, and sheer cliffs in the Northern Hemisphere's most southerly drift-ice zone — a rare ecological sanctuary.
How do I access Shiretoko?
Fly into Memanbetsu Airport; Utoro Onsen (2 hours by bus) is the gateway. Drift-ice tours in winter, cruises and Five Lakes hiking in summer. About 7 hours by car from Sapporo — a rental car is strongly recommended.
When is the best season to photograph it?
Late January to early March for drift ice (most popular), June for fresh greenery, September–October for autumn colors and Five Lakes reflections. Drift-ice walks require reservations; ice conditions vary year to year.
What if I encounter a brown bear?
Shiretoko has one of the world's highest brown-bear densities. Don't run, don't turn your back — slowly retreat. Seal strong-smelling food and pack out all trash. Stay 20m+ away even for photos. The Shiretoko Five Lakes raised boardwalk lets you walk through bear country without encounters, with rangers patrolling.
How do I reach Cape Shiretoko?
There are no roads. Sightseeing boats from Utoro or Rausu ports are the only way to see it (3.5–5 hr). Closed in winter due to drift ice — May–October only. Rare brown bear, orca, and dolphin sightings make the trip rewarding.
What is a «drift-ice walk»?
A 2–3 hour activity walking on the Sea of Okhotsk's drift ice in a dry suit. Late January to early March only; book through Shiretoko Nature Office or similar. You can even submerge under the ice — for photography, a waterproof housing is essential.
