National Treasure Matsumoto Castle Through the Seasons: Framing the Crow Castle with the Northern Alps

Matsumoto Castle in Nagano is a National Treasure and one of Japan's 12 surviving original keeps. Its jet-black walls earned the nickname «Crow Castle.» The five-tier, six-story keep evokes Sengoku-era power, framed by the white ridges of the Northern Alps behind, the mirror-still inner moat, and a year-round shift through the seasons.

【Spring】Mid-April cherry blossoms. About 300 cherry trees in the inner and second baileys reach full bloom. The classic shot is from across the inner moat at Uzumi Bridge, framing the keep, blossoms, and Alps in a single image. Arrive before 6 a.m. for the most dramatic moment — alpenglow on the snowy peaks behind.

【Early Summer】May greenery and June dawn mist. On misty mornings the keep appears to float on a sea of fog like an ink-wash painting. Target clear skies after rain to maximize contrast against the Alps.

【Autumn】Late October to early November foliage. The cherry and maple trees within the grounds turn crimson, yellow, and orange against the black keep. Autumn brings the clearest air and sharpest views of the Alps' ridgelines. Late afternoon paints the keep gold in the western light.

【Winter】January–February snow. Snow on the keep, frozen inner moat, and white-shining Alps create what locals call Matsumoto Castle's «sumi-e (ink painting) season.» Snow days often bring still, calm air — ideal for capturing snow and keep together.

Top vantages: (1) Uzumi Bridge for the classic vertical; (2) the cherry tunnel at Kuromon Gate; (3) the elevated view from the Matsumoto Local History Museum north of the park, looking across the moat; (4) the high ground near the Otemon well. A 24–70 mm standard zoom covers most needs. Use a 70–200 mm telephoto to compress the Alps closer to the keep.
