Summer in Shiretoko: Walking the Coast and Forests of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Utoro's clear coast, the primeval forests of the Five Lakes, and waterfalls cascading down sheer cliffs. A summer journey through one of Japan's last wild frontiers.

Summer in Shiretoko: Walking the Coast and Forests of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The long, narrow Shiretoko Peninsula juts into the Sea of Okhotsk on Hokkaido's far eastern edge. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, it remains one of Japan's most uncompromised wild places. The name comes from the Ainu «sir etok» — «end of the earth.» Shiretoko is famous worldwide for its winter drift ice, but the easiest and most rewarding seasons to visit are early summer through autumn, when the greens deepen and both sky and sea turn perfectly clear.

The gateway is Utoro, a small fishing port. The water along its harbor is startlingly transparent, and seabirds line the rocky shore. Drive northeast along the coastal road and you'll meet sheer cliffs rising straight out of the sea, a small lighthouse on the headland, and the famous Oronko Rock — climb it for a sweeping ocean view.

Slightly inland is Shiretoko Goko, the Five Lakes. Boardwalks lead you through dense primeval forest past five quiet lakes that mirror the surrounding mountains. Deer and foxes are common. During bear-active months (May–July), access is via guided tour only — check the local tourism office before visiting.

Furepe Falls, where water drops directly from a cliff into the sea, is another scene that captures Shiretoko's character. A 20-minute meadow walk leads to the observation deck, where ocean, waterfall, and sky stretch open in one panorama.

Winter drift ice is overwhelming, no question. But summer Shiretoko has its own quiet appeal — a season where humans and nature coexist gently, perfect for first-time Hokkaido trips and family travel.

【Access】About 2 hours by car from Memanbetsu Airport, 3.5 hours from Kushiro. From Sapporo, fly + rental car is most practical. 【Best season】June–September. July–August peak for greenery and wildflowers; September brings cooler weather and fewer tourists. 【Lodging】Utoro Onsen has hotels of all sizes plus several day-trip bath options.
