ฮอกไกโด· Akan

Lake Akan, in Akan-cho, Kushiro City, Hokkaido, lies within Akan-Mashu National Park between Mt. Oakan (1,371 m) and Mt. Meakan (1,499 m) — a caldera lake of 13.3 km² with a maximum depth of 45 m. The spherical algae «marimo» found at its bottom occur naturally nowhere else in the world; designated a Natural Monument in 1921 and a Special Natural Monument in 1952, marimo are uniquely Japanese. The lakeside Akanko Onsen hosts one of Hokkaido's largest Ainu Kotan (settlements), where Ainu Old-Style Dance (a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property) and wood carving are still practiced. Winter brings smelt fishing, an ice-covered lake, and stargazing, while summer offers the October Marimo Festival — the lake is a year-round destination for nature and culture photography.

Highlights

  • Marimo Exhibition Observation Center (Churui Island) — reached by sightseeing boat; close-up views of the Special Natural Monument spherical algae
  • Ainu Kotan — one of Hokkaido's largest Ainu settlements, with Old-Style Dance performances, wood carving shops, and living tradition
  • Lakeside Promenade — a walking path past «Bokke» mud volcanoes, contrasting the lake surface with volcanic terrain
  • Winter Ice Festival (January–March) — smelt fishing, snow sports, fireworks, and skies full of stars
  • Marimo Festival (October) — an Ainu ritual returning marimo to the lake, a mystical subject for photography

Quick Answers

What is Lake Akan?
A caldera lake in Akan-Mashu National Park, Kushiro City, Hokkaido — the only lake in the world where marimo (spherical algae, a Special Natural Monument) occur naturally. Hosting one of Hokkaido's largest Ainu Kotan settlements, it offers both nature and living culture for photographers.
Can I see marimo?
At the Marimo Exhibition Observation Center on Churui Island — reached by sightseeing boat. Total time is about 1 hour 20 minutes (boat + island tour); operating from April to November. Boats halt in winter when the lake freezes over.
Best seasons?
Three peak seasons: fresh greens of May–June, October foliage (with the Marimo Festival), and the Winter Ice Festival (January–March). Winter combines a star-filled sky with a frozen surface in dream-like compositions; aurora viewing events are occasionally held at night.
Photography etiquette in Ainu Kotan?
It is a living Ainu community — never photograph homes or people without permission. The Old-Style «Kamuy Yukar» dance (evening, ¥1,200 admission) allows photography inside the venue (no flash or tripods in most cases). Ask the artisan before shooting wood-carving works. Ainu cuisine (ohau soup, ruibe frozen fish) makes distinctive subjects.
Access and lodging?
1 hour by car from Kushiro Airport, 2 hours by Akan Bus from Kushiro Station (¥2,750), or about 4 hours from Sapporo by limited express plus bus. Akanko Onsen has ~30 ryokan including Tsuruga and Akan Yuku-no-Sato (from ¥15,000/night with two meals). Snowmobile and ice-fishing tours are easiest as ryokan package plans.
What is the Ice Festival?
Late January to mid-March, on the frozen Lake Akan. Smelt fishing (rod rental ¥1,000), banana boats, snowmobiles, and 20:30 fireworks (weekends and high season) are highlights. Fireworks-on-ice are rare even for Hokkaido — the trio of fireworks reflected on the lake plus the star-filled sky creates a unique composition.
