Cherry blossom (April) and autumn leaves (November) are most beautiful, but late October to late November offers the most stable weather (no spring haze, monsoon, or typhoons). Snow-capped Matsumoto «Crow» Castle in winter is one of Japan's premier castle scenes. Himeji's white plaster looks brilliant against any season's backdrop.

Early morning (7:00–9:00) is least crowded; white plaster and dark cladding catch the morning sun beautifully. Sunset 17:00+ silhouettes towers against the sky. Castles with night illumination (Matsumoto, Matsuyama, Kochi, Himeji) shine brightest in the 30-minute blue hour after sunset. Two magic hours per day.
Teknik
Castles photograph well in 3-layer compositions: foreground, mid-ground, background. Wide-angle (16–35mm) for sky+castle+people three-layer; medium-tele (70–200mm) for tower details; tele (200–400mm) for distant castles in atmospheric haze. Symmetry (Himeji frontal) and leading lines (steps, cherry rows) are powerful. HDR balances bright sky against dark stone walls.
Utrustning
Tripod essential for early-morning and night shots (forbidden inside Himeji's keep — note this). Wide zoom (16–35mm) + standard zoom (24–105mm) covers most scenes. Telephoto only needed for distant castles like Takato. C-PL deepens sky blue. Tripod head with quick-release plate recommended.
Praktiska tips
Himeji is crowded on weekends — 30-minute entry waits possible. Visit weekdays. Matsumoto's black lacquer benefits from overcast/rain (texture stronger). Takato Castle Park's sakura + ruined stone walls peak mid-to-late April. Kanazawa's snow + stone walls + reddish lattice windows is a winter-only scene.
