Noboribetsu in Spring: Cherry Blossoms, the Sea, and a Hot-Spring Town

Noboribetsu is famous for its onsen and «Hell Valley,» but step outside town and a spring coastline of cherry blossoms unfolds along the Pacific.

Noboribetsu in Spring: Cherry Blossoms, the Sea, and a Hot-Spring Town

Noboribetsu, on Hokkaido's southwestern coast, is widely known for its steaming Jigokudani («Hell Valley») and one of Japan's most popular onsen towns. Most visitors see the hot springs and head home — but a short drive outside town opens up a Pacific coastline and a quiet cherry-blossom landscape in spring.

Cherry blossom season here arrives later than on Honshu — usually around Japan's Golden Week (early May). Hokkaido's blossoms differ from the soft pink Yoshino cherries most associate with hanami; the local Ezo-yamazakura skews to a deeper pink, and trees grow more modestly. With air still cool and petals drifting down quietly, the experience contrasts noticeably with the lively Honshu cherry season.

A short drive along the coast reveals the deep blue Pacific, with Muroran's Hakucho Bridge visible across the water. From the headland, you look down a sweeping shoreline — fishing harbors, small towns, and capes stretching into the distance. Sea winds are still cold in spring, but the sun is gentle. It's the kind of season made for stopping the car and sitting still for a while.

Noboribetsu Onsen itself is at its calmest in spring, making it a strategic time to visit. The view from outdoor baths — mountains turning fresh green after the snow melts — has a softness you won't find in winter or summer. The walking paths around Jigokudani and Oyunuma are also at their most pleasant before summer crowds arrive.

Cherry blossoms, the coast, and onsen — all three in a single day is what makes spring Noboribetsu rewarding. Skipping winter and autumn for the off-peak shoulder season turns Hokkaido travel into something quieter and more personal.

【Access】About 1 hour 20 minutes by limited express from Sapporo, 70 minutes by bus from New Chitose Airport. A rental car helps for getting around the area. 【Best season】Early-May cherry blossoms, June–September coastal drives, late-October autumn colors, year-round onsen. Each season has its own character. 【Nearby】Noboribetsu Onsen, Jigokudani, Oyunuma, Muroran's Hakucho Bridge, and Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe (aquarium).
