Kyoto's Autumn Color: A Walk Between Tofuku-ji and Kinkaku-ji

Kyoto's Autumn Color: A Walk Between Tofuku-ji and Kinkaku-ji

Kyoto's autumn foliage peaks from mid-to-late November. Among the city's 1,600+ temples and shrines, two rise as the most beloved fall destinations: Tofuku-ji and Kinkaku-ji. They sit at opposite ends of the city — southeast and northwest — but with half a day each, you can take both in slowly in a single day.

Start the morning at Tofuku-ji. Founded in 1236 as a major Zen temple, its Tsutenkyo bridge offers a dazzling «sea of maples.» Some 2,000 maples planted in the valley below color the entire ravine in red, orange, and lingering green — a layered gradient. The trick is to enter right at the 8:30 opening and head straight for the bridge. Stopping on the bridge isn't allowed, so if you want to linger, walk the temple grounds at either end and enjoy the trees up close.

In the afternoon, head northwest to Kinkaku-ji. About an hour by bus, with lunch in between for a comfortable rhythm. The Golden Pavilion was built in 1397 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and it still mirrors clearly in Kyoko-chi pond. In autumn, surrounding maples frame the gold tower, and the reflection doubles the scene in the water. The afternoon backlight makes the gold glow especially intensely.

To avoid crowds, weekday mornings or a few days off-peak work best. A week before peak, you get the green-to-red gradient; a week after, fallen leaves carpet the stone paths — both are beautiful in different ways. Rainy days bring fewer visitors and richer color in wet leaves, another good window.

If you have more time, ending the day east in the Higashiyama district — strolling Sannenzaka or Yasaka Shrine — completes a full Kyoto day, pairing autumn temples with the evening townscape.

【Access】Tofuku-ji: 10 min walk from JR Nara Line «Tofukuji.» Kinkaku-ji: Kyoto City Bus «Kinkaku-ji-michi.» 【Admission】Tofuku-ji (Tsutenkyo + Kaisando) ¥600, Kinkaku-ji ¥500. 【Best season】Mid-to-late November. Color depends on temperature and sunlight — check Kyoto City's tourism site for current foliage status.
