오타루

홋카이도· Otaru

Otaru, in the Shiribeshi General Subprefectural Bureau of Hokkaido, is a port city of about 110,000 residents. It flourished as Hokkaido's logistics hub during the Meiji and Taisho eras, lined with banks and trading houses to the point of being called «the Wall Street of the North.» The 1,140 m Otaru Canal (completed 1923) was built to link sea transport and warehousing, but since 1986 has been redeveloped as a promenade where stone warehouses and 63 gas lamps create a nostalgic night view. About 30 minutes by rapid train from Sapporo, it offers glasswork (Kitaichi Glass), the Music Box Museum, sushi and seafood, the Nishin Goten herring mansion, and the night view from the Mt. Tengu ropeway — all within a half- to full-day photographic itinerary.

빠른 답변

What is Otaru?
A port city in Hokkaido that flourished as a logistics hub in the Meiji and Taisho eras — once called «the Wall Street of the North.» The canal with 63 gas lamps and stone warehouses creates a nostalgic nightscape; with glasswork, seafood, and 30 minutes from Sapporo, it ranks among the region's top photography destinations.
Best photo spot along the canal?
Midway between Asakusa Bridge and Chuo Bridge — warehouses, canal, and gas lamps fit in one frame. The blue hour (30 min after sunset) is ideal; the snowy winter canal is a world-class rare subject.
When is the best season to photograph?
January–February's snow-clad canal is globally iconic; June for hydrangeas; October for autumn colors; glasswork streets year-round. The February «Otaru Snow Light Path» fills the canal with tiny candle flames — a magical limited-time event.
How do I get there?
From Sapporo Station, JR Hakodate Line Rapid Airport takes 32 min, ¥640. From New Chitose Airport, the same Rapid Airport takes ~75 min to Otaru, ¥1,910. From Otaru Station to the canal is a 10-min walk. Taxis or buses reach Mt. Tengu ropeway and Shukutsu within 30 min. Rental cars require care for winter snow and ice.
When is the «Yuki Akari no Michi» festival?
10 days each mid-February. About 300,000 candles and snow candles light the canal and old Temiya rail path — a magical event 17:00–21:00 daily. It often overlaps with the Sapporo Snow Festival, making a Sapporo+Otaru multi-day photography itinerary practical.
Where are the seafood and gourmet photo spots?
Sankaku Market (in front of the station, sea urchin and crab bowls), Sakaimachi street (20+ sushi restaurants), and North 1 Hall in Kitaichi Glass House #3 (a café lit by 167 oil lamps — atmospheric interiors). The 120-year-old Nishin Goten in Shukutsu shows Taisho-era life. In winter, indoor steam against outdoor snow makes great frames.
