Ehime
Ehime, in northwestern Shikoku (population 1.3 million), faces the Inland Sea and the Bungo Channel and is home to «Dogo Onsen,» Japan's oldest hot spring with over 3,000 years of history. The Important Cultural Property Dogo Onsen Honkan (built in 1894, the setting of Soseki's novel «Botchan»), Matsuyama Castle (one of Japan's 12 surviving keeps), the Shimanami Kaido (seven bridges linking Onomichi in Honshu and Imabari in Shikoku), the Mt. Kiro Observatory's view over countless islands, and Uchiko's whitewashed merchant streets together distill history, hot springs, and islandscape into one photographic prefecture.

What is Ehime Prefecture?
Northwestern Shikoku's prefecture, home to 3,000-year-old Dogo Onsen (Japan's oldest), Matsuyama Castle (one of 12 surviving keeps), the Shimanami Kaido bridges, and the multi-island vistas from Mt. Kiro — a fusion of history and seascapes.
Can I photograph Dogo Onsen Honkan?
The exterior is fully open; we recommend the evening illumination, rear angles, and alley framing. Some interior areas are off-limits to respect bathers' privacy. Following December 2024's renovation, the building looks even more refined.
Best photo spots on the Shimanami Kaido?
Mt. Kiro Observatory (overlooking Onaruto Bridge), Itoyama Park (sunset), Tatara Bridge with Ikuchi Island in view, and Mijika Island off Hakata Island. A full bike ride lets you experience the entire 60 km in a day.
