Lago Toya

Hokkaido· Lake Toya

Lake Toya is a caldera lake spanning Toyako and Sobetsu in Abuta District, Hokkaido — 70.7 km² in area, 180 m at its deepest, with Japan's third-highest water clarity. Formed about 110,000 years ago by a massive eruption, four islands (Nakajima) float at the center of the lake. The neighboring Mt. Usu (737 m) and Showa-Shinzan (398 m) remain active, and the lake-mountain-onsen ensemble forms the heart of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Known as the host of the 2008 G8 Hokkaido Toya Lake Summit, it also features the «Long-Run Fireworks» — 450 shots fired every night from April to October — whose reflection on the lake's surface ranks among Japan's finest spectacles.

Highlights

  • Toya Summit Memorial Observatory — atop Cape Shirenbi, capturing the lake, Nakajima, and Mt. Yotei («Ezo Fuji») in one frame
  • Nightly Fireworks (April–October) — 20:45–21:05, 450 shots, the world's longest-running fireworks display; the reflection on the lake is essential
  • Mt. Usu — a 737 m active volcano; a ropeway leads to the summit, offering grand views over Lake Toya and Uchiura Bay
  • Showa-Shinzan — a 398 m «new mountain» that emerged in the 1944–45 eruption; its red-brown slopes are striking and globally rare
  • Nakajima — four islands at the lake's center reachable by ferry, with primeval forest and Hokkaido sika deer

Quick Answers

What is Lake Toya?
A caldera lake in Hokkaido — 70.7 km² with Japan's third-highest water clarity, formed by a massive eruption 110,000 years ago. With the active volcanoes Mt. Usu and Showa-Shinzan, it forms the heart of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, hosted the 2008 G8 Summit, and is famous for nightly fireworks April through October.
Tips for shooting fireworks?
Tripod required. ISO 100, f/8, 4–8s bulb exposure. The lakeside observation deck captures fireworks with their reflection. 450 shots in about 20 minutes from 20:45. On windless nights the reflection on the water is mirror-perfect.
Access and best season?
About 2 hours by car from Sapporo, 20 minutes by bus from JR Toya Station, or 2 hours by car from New Chitose Airport. Best from April to October during fireworks season, especially summer–autumn when the lake is calm. Snow-clad lake and volcanoes in winter offer their own beauty.
What is the G8 Summit Memorial Observatory?
On Cape Shirenbi (625 m elevation), with sweeping views of Lake Toya, Nakajima Islands, Mt. Yotei («Ezo Fuji»), and Mt. Usu. Behind the Windsor Hotel where the 2008 G8 was held; free, open 24 hours. Autumn morning sea-of-fog days are especially stunning.
Mt. Usu Ropeway?
6-minute ride to the 737 m summit station; round trip ¥1,800. From the top, 360° panoramas of Lake Toya, Uchiura Bay, and Funka Bay. The 2000-eruption craters are visible up close. Closed in winter (Nov–Apr); summer hours 8:30–18:00.
Best onsen lodging?
The Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa (G8 venue, luxury views over the lake), Toya Sun Palace (lakeside with outdoor pool and fireworks-view seats), Northern Quay (good value), and others. The combination of lakeside open-air baths and fireworks is uniquely Toya. Many ryokan offer day-bath access ¥500–¥1,500.
