Taman Takashima (Suwa)

Nagano· Takashima Park (Suwa)

Takashima Park, in Takashima, Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, is a roughly 4-hectare municipal park developed on the ruins of Takashima Castle — the seat of the Suwa clan and Suwa domain. Designated a Nagano Prefecture Historic Site, the castle was a flatland fortress built between 1592 and 1598 by Hineno Oribe-no-kami Takayoshi. Originally surrounded by moats fed by Lake Suwa's waters, it was known as «Suwa's Floating Castle» and counted among Japan's three great «lake castles.» The current keep (three stories, three tiers) was reconstructed in 1970 (exterior only); the interior houses a Suwa-domain history museum. About 100 Yoshino cherry trees around the moat bloom in mid-April, and the keep mirrored in the moat with cherry blossoms is one of Suwa's signature spring scenes. Winter brings illumination over the frozen moat, summer the lotus, and autumn the foliage — making the park a year-round photography destination.

Highlights

  • Reconstructed Keep and Moat — the 1970-reconstructed three-tier keep with the moat; the mirror reflection is beautiful
  • Cherry Blossoms with Moat Reflection (mid-April) — about 100 cherry trees and the keep mirrored on water — Suwa's signature spring frame
  • Lotus Flowers (July–August) — pink and white lotus blossoms on the moat against the keep, fantastically dreamlike
  • Autumn Foliage (November) — Japanese maples reflected on the moat with the keep behind
  • Winter Illumination — illuminated over the frozen moat; blue hour is most magical

Quick Answers

What is Takashima Park?
A municipal park in Suwa City, Nagano, on the ruins of Takashima Castle — the seat of the Suwa clan and domain. With its reconstructed keep, moat (heir to the «Suwa's Floating Castle» tradition), and about 100 cherry trees mirrored on water, it is one of Suwa's signature spring photography destinations.
Best spot for the moat reflection?
From the south side of the moat, use a telephoto to compress the keep and cherry blossoms. Windless mornings or evenings give mirror-still water. During illumination, the blue hour (30 minutes after sunset) is most magical. Cherry season is especially crowded — arrive 5–6 AM.
Access and best timing?
10 minutes on foot from JR Kami-Suwa Station, or 5 minutes by car. Cherry blossoms in mid-April are the peak; summer lotus (July–August), November foliage, and winter illumination (occasionally held in February for the Omiwatari ice ridges) make it a year-round destination. Allow 1 hour.
Keep admission and hours?
Keep entry ¥310 (¥150 elementary/middle school). 9:00–17:30 (until 16:30 Oct–Mar). Closed Mondays. Floors 1–3 hold the Suwa Domain Museum; the 3rd-floor observation deck commands views of Lake Suwa, Yatsugatake, and Suwa City. The 1970 reconstruction is reinforced concrete on the inside; interior photography is fine.
History of «Suwa's Floating Castle»?
Built 1592–98 by Hineno Oribe-no-kami Takayoshi as a water castle. Lake Suwa's waters fed the surrounding moat, earning the nickname «Floating Castle.» One of Japan's «Three Great Water Castles» (Takashima, Matsue, Shimabara), it served as the Suwa domain's administrative seat through the Meiji Restoration. A Nagano Prefecture Historic Site; parts of the original moat structure survive — archaeologically significant.
Combined sightseeing route?
①Takashima Park (morning, cherry + reflection) ②Kami-Suwa Onsen (5 min by car, Katakurakan's «1,000-person bath» in Western architecture) ③Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya (15 min by car, Onbashira Festival's sacred ground) ④Lake Suwa (lakeside jog, 16 km loop) ⑤Tateishi Park (15 min by car, night view). Full-day Suwa circuit; Kami-Suwa Onsen makes a convenient overnight base.
