Oita

Oita, in eastern Kyushu (population 1.1 million), is Japan's «No.1 onsen prefecture» with about 4,400 hot spring sources and 130,000 kL of daily output — the highest in the country. The «Eight Hot Springs of Beppu» (Beppu, Kannawa, Kankaiji, Myoban, Hamawaki, Horita, Kamegawa, and Shibaseki) form one of the world's rare onsen clusters, with the steam-laced cityscape forming a unique photographic subject. Yufuin sits beneath Mt. Yufu (1,583 m), and the prefecture also features the Kuju mountain range, Japan's highest pedestrian suspension bridge (Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi, 173 m), Yabakei's strange rock formations, and Usa Jingu — head of all 44,000 Hachimangu shrines nationwide.

Highlights

  • Beppu's «Hells» — seven distinct hot spring spots: cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku, blood-red Chinoike Jigoku, the geyser Tatsumaki Jigoku, and more
  • Yukemuri Observatory at Kannawa Onsen — the citywide rising steam plumes, particularly thick on cold winter mornings, present an extraordinary subject
  • Yufuin and Mt. Yufu — a hot-spring town beneath the 1,583 m peak, with Lake Kinrin's morning mist and autumn reflections
  • Kokonoe Yume Otsuribashi — Japan's tallest pedestrian suspension bridge (173 m × 390 m), pairing well with Shindo Falls and autumn colors
  • Yabakei — one of Japan's «Three Strange Sceneries,» including Ao no Domon, Kyoshuho rock face, and the Hitomehakkei viewpoint; November autumn colors are unforgettable

Quick Answers

What is Oita Prefecture?
An eastern Kyushu prefecture and Japan's «No.1 onsen prefecture» — first in source count and daily output. Subjects include the steam-veiled streets of Beppu, the highland Yufuin, the Kuju mountains, Japan's tallest pedestrian suspension bridge, Yabakei's strange rocks, and Usa Jingu (head of all Hachimangu shrines).
Where can I capture Beppu's steam-rising skyline?
The Yukemuri Observatory in Kannawa Onsen. Winter mornings produce the thickest steam plumes due to temperature contrast. Wait from before sunrise; the moment first light strikes the streets is the golden composition. The observatory is free with parking.
When is the best season to photograph Oita?
Steam plumes are unrivaled on winter mornings; Yufuin's Lake Kinrin morning mist peaks in October–November; Yabakei and Kokonoe Bridge autumn colors shine mid-to-late November; the Hells of Beppu look year-round but steam stands out best in winter.
