Kamakura

Kanagawa

Kamakura is an ancient capital in southeastern Kanagawa Prefecture (population ~170,000), where Minamoto no Yoritomo founded Japan's first samurai government — the Kamakura Shogunate — in 1185. It served as the political center for about 150 years until 1333. The city contains over 100 temples and shrines, most famously the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in (cast 1252, 11.4 m tall, a National Treasure), Hasedera (hydrangeas and autumn colors), Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (the Minamoto clan's tutelary shrine), and Hokoku-ji (the «Bamboo Temple»). With the Enoden train running along the coast and views of Enoshima and Mt. Fuji from Yuigahama and Shichirigahama, Kamakura ranks among Kanto's finest one-day photographic destinations combining history and the sea.

Highlights

  • Great Buddha at Kotoku-in — cast in 1252, an 11.4 m, 121-tonne bronze Amida Buddha; a National Treasure, with interior viewing available
  • Hasedera — June hydrangeas (40 varieties, 2,500 plants), November illuminated maples, with sweeping views of Sagami Bay from the lookout
  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu — founded 1063; the Dankazura cherry-tree avenue, the Maiden stage, the great gingko (fell 2010, regrowing), and the lotus-filled Genji Pond
  • Enoden Kamakurakokomae crossing — the «Slam Dunk» opening-credits landmark, with the level crossing in front of Enoshima across the sea
  • Hokokuji — the «Bamboo Temple,» with a grove of 2,000 moso bamboo; sip matcha while photographing the silence

Quick Answers

What is Kamakura?
An ancient capital in southeastern Kanagawa Prefecture, where Minamoto no Yoritomo founded Japan's first samurai government — the Kamakura Shogunate — in 1185. With 100+ temples and shrines, the National Treasure Great Buddha, Hasedera, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the Enoden coast, it offers history and sea in a single day's outing.
Must-see photo spots in Kamakura?
The Great Buddha, Hasedera (hydrangeas, autumn colors), Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Hokokuji's bamboo grove, and the Enoden Kamakurakokomae crossing (a «Slam Dunk» landmark). To cover all five in a day, plan an early-morning start.
When is the best season?
Cherry blossoms early April, Hasedera's hydrangeas mid-June, autumn colors late November to early December, and Mt. Fuji with Enoshima in winter. Hasedera and Meigetsu-in see long lines during hydrangea season — go on a weekday morning.
How do I get to Kamakura?
From Tokyo Station, JR Yokosuka Line ~1 hr, ¥940. From Shinjuku, Shonan-Shinjuku Line ~1 hr. From Kamakura Station, the Enoden serves major sights. The «Noriorikun» day pass (¥800) is convenient. Weekends are crowded — go midweek if possible.
Etiquette for the Enoden crossing photo?
The Kamakurakokomae crossing has been overwhelmed by «Slam Dunk» pilgrims, with complaints from residents. Don't step onto the tracks, don't shoot from the road, and don't block the spot at peak times. Before 7:00 AM or after 5:00 PM is much less crowded.
Can I enter the Great Buddha?
Yes — a small interior is open (¥20 extra for adults). The cramped space lets you see the 8-section casting joints up close. Open 8:00–18:00, 5 minutes is plenty. No flash. During crowds, viewing time may be limited.
