Furano & Biei in Summer: Hokkaido's Patchwork Hills

In the heart of Hokkaido, the Furano basin and the rolling hills of Biei feel uncommonly wide — even by Japanese countryside standards. The sky is enormous, fields run to the horizon, and the Tokachi mountain range floats gently in the distance. Even if you've never traveled in Hokkaido, you've probably seen this scene in photos or paintings.
A summer highlight is the «stripes of color» where farms and flower gardens align. Red, yellow, white, and purple bands of flowers follow the slope of the hills like a giant patchwork quilt. Among the popular flower parks, Zerubu-no-Oka and Shikisai-no-Oka are inexpensive and family-friendly — some even offer tractor-bus rides through the fields.
Drive up one of the gentle slopes and you'll find a viewpoint that looks down onto Furano town and the plain below. Roofs cluster together, green-and-yellow fields stretch beyond them, and the Tokachi range rises further still. Holding all of that in one quiet view feels distinctly Hokkaido — not something you encounter elsewhere in Japan.
Even in summer, mornings and evenings are cool. Between 6 and 8 a.m., the air is crisp and the distant mountains stand out clearly. A day of warm afternoons and breezy evenings is enough to leave you feeling that you've truly arrived in Hokkaido.

JR Furano Line connects Furano and Biei stations, where bus tours and bike rentals are easy to find. 【Best season】Late June through August.
