Tokushima

Tokushima is an eastern Shikoku prefecture (population 720,000) framed by the world-class tidal whirlpools of the Naruto Strait. Born of the tidal differential between the Inland Sea and the Kii Channel, whirlpools exceed 20 m across at peak high or low tide. The 400-year-old Awa Odori dance festival (August 12–15), the secluded Iya Valley with its Heike clan legends, sacred Mt. Tsurugi (1,955 m), and Ryozenji — the first temple of the Shikoku 88 Pilgrimage — make Tokushima the gateway to Shikoku where nature and festival culture meet.

  • Onaruto Bridge — a 1,629 m suspension bridge linking Awaji Island and Tokushima; the iconic frame combines bridge piers with whirlpools
  • Iya Vine Bridge — a 45 m, 14 m-high bridge woven from shirakuchi-kazura vines, deep in the secluded valley tied to Heike clan legend
  • Awa Odori (August) — a 400-year tradition where ren dance troupes parade through the city, an irresistible moving subject
  • Mt. Tsurugi (1,955 m) — Shikoku's second-highest peak, a lift takes you near the summit, October autumn colors are extraordinary

快速問答

What is Tokushima Prefecture?
An eastern Shikoku prefecture framed by the world-class tidal whirlpools of the Naruto Strait. With the 400-year-old Awa Odori festival, the secluded Iya Valley, sacred Mt. Tsurugi, and the start of the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage, it pairs nature with festival culture.
When are Naruto's whirlpools largest?
Around high or low tide (±1–2 hours) on spring and autumn spring tides (near new or full moon). Check tide tables, then shoot from a 45-minute tour boat or from the «Uzu no Michi» walkway under Onaruto Bridge — vortices over 20 m occur.
How do I get there?
30 minutes by car from Tokushima Awaodori Airport to Naruto Sightseeing Port; 1 hour by air from Tokyo or Osaka. The drive across the Akashi-Kaikyo and Onaruto bridges is itself a popular scenic route.
