長野縣· Niimura, Matsumoto

Matsumoto City Niimura is a rural area in western Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, about 4 km west of JR Matsumoto Station, centered on the small Niimura Station of the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line (the former Matsumoto Electric Railway). Until merging with Matsumoto City in 1954, it was the independent farming village of Niimura in Higashi-Chikuma District. Today, apple orchards, paddy fields, fruit groves, and Sekishu-tile-roofed kura storehouses preserve the simple village landscape that contrasts with the city center, embodying classic rural Japan. With the Northern Alps — Mt. Norikura, Mt. Jonen, the Hotaka Range — as borrowed scenery, the retro two-car Kamikochi Line train threading through the paddies is beloved by photographers who appreciate both railway and pastoral imagery — a hidden gem in Matsumoto's western suburbs.

亮點與特色

  • Pastoral Kamikochi Line — the two-car retro train against the Northern Alps, sacred ground for railway photography
  • Cherry-Lined Paths (April) — cherry blossoms around Niimura Station, the train-and-blossom combo capturing local spring
  • Green Paddies (June–August) — flooded paddies after planting; setting sun and rice form vibrant green landscapes
  • Ripe Rice (September–October) — golden ears against the white ridges of the Northern Alps
  • Former Mitsumizo Station — a small wooden station and disused line, a nostalgic architectural subject

About the Kamikochi Line train?
Alpico's Kamikochi Line connects Matsumoto Station with Shin-Shimashima Station — a local line with high-decker cars and nostalgic 2-car retro consists. Popular among rail fans; with the right angle, it's been called «Japan's shortest line offering the Alps as backdrop.» The train + paddies pairing also appeals to landscape photographers.
Choosing photo spots?
①Paddies 10 min on foot from Niimura Station (level-crossing grand vistas) ②Around former Mitsumizo Station (wooden depot + train) ③Cherry-lined paths near Shimojima Station (April) ④Azusa River paddies (autumn). It's also residents' daily life — never enter private land or interfere with farm work. Observe rail photography etiquette (no track trespass).
