Matsumoto City Niimura is a rural area in western Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, about 4 km west of JR Matsumoto Station, centered on the small Niimura Station of the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line (the former Matsumoto Electric Railway). Until merging with Matsumoto City in 1954, it was the independent farming village of Niimura in Higashi-Chikuma District. Today, apple orchards, paddy fields, fruit groves, and Sekishu-tile-roofed kura storehouses preserve the simple village landscape that contrasts with the city center, embodying classic rural Japan. With the Northern Alps — Mt. Norikura, Mt. Jonen, the Hotaka Range — as borrowed scenery, the retro two-car Kamikochi Line train threading through the paddies is beloved by photographers who appreciate both railway and pastoral imagery — a hidden gem in Matsumoto's western suburbs.
