Wiry Naruto

Tokushima· Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto Strait, between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Minamiawaji City in Hyogo Prefecture (Awaji Island), is a narrow channel about 1.3 km wide that connects the Inland Sea to the Kii Channel. The combination of a tidal differential of up to 1.5 m and the narrow geography drives water through at about 20 km/h (max 10 knots), producing one of Japan's three great tidal currents — and one of the world's three (alongside the Strait of Messina and Seymour Narrows). Whirlpools over 20 m across reach maximum size 1–2 hours around high or low tide, especially during the spring tides of spring and autumn (near new and full moons). They can be photographed from sightseeing boats or from «Uzu-no-Michi,» the walkway 45 m above the strait beneath the Onaruto Bridge.

Highlights

  • Whirlpools — over 20 m across, one of the world's three great tidal currents; largest 1–2 hours around high or low tide
  • Sightseeing boat — departs from Naruto Sightseeing Port; a 30-minute cruise approaches the whirlpools at full intensity
  • Uzu-no-Michi — a 450 m walkway under the Onaruto Bridge, 45 m above the strait, with glass floors offering direct views of the whirlpools
  • Senjojiki Observatory and Naruto Park — overlooks on the Tokushima side; cherry blossoms with the strait make a stunning spring scene
  • Michi-no-Eki Uzushio (Awaji side) — sweeping view of the bridge and strait; the sunset moment is unforgettable

Quick Answers

What is the Naruto Strait?
A 1.3 km-wide channel between Tokushima and Awaji Island, one of the world's three great tidal currents. The tidal gap between the Inland Sea and the Kii Channel pushes water at about 20 km/h, producing whirlpools over 20 m across — a globally rare phenomenon for photographers.
Tour boat or walkway?
Boats for intensity (up close to the surface), the «Uzu-no-Michi» walkway for safety and overhead views (45 m above the strait, looking straight down). Boat riders should expect spray; doing both lets you photograph the whirlpools from every angle.
Best photography time?
Spring and autumn spring tides (near new and full moons), 1–2 hours around high or low tide are the peak. Check tide tables; the tourism association's «Whirlpool Calendar» is helpful. Reserving a boat slot in advance is recommended.
Boat and walkway fees and hours?
Sightseeing boats «Uzushio Kisen» and «Uzushio Cruise» (from Kameura Port or Fukura Port, ~30 min, ¥1,800–2,500). Uzu-no-Michi (Onaruto Bridge walkway, 9:00–18:00, ¥510, summer extended hours). Combo discounts available at tourism offices. Reservations required during peak periods.
Recommended camera gear?
①Telephoto 70–300mm (to crop whirlpool detail) ②ND filter (slow shutter for whirlpool motion) ③CPL (cuts surface reflection, makes whirlpools more visible) ④Wide angle (bridge + strait grand vista). Boats rock — image stabilization helps. Use a lens hood against spray and rinse off salt afterwards.
Combined sightseeing route?
①Naruto Strait (morning, sightseeing boat) ②Uzu-no-Michi walkway (afternoon, overhead views) ③Awaji Michi-no-Eki Uzushio (sunset) ④Naruto Park (Senjojiki Observatory, cherry-blossom site) ⑤Naruto German House (the Bando POW camp where Beethoven's 9th had its Japanese premiere). One full day for many whirlpool angles; stay on Awaji for next-morning sea.
