Okinawa

The main island of Okinawa is the prefecture's heart — about 106 km north-south, up to 28 km east-west, with 1.4 million residents in a subtropical setting. From 1429 to 1879 it served as the independent «Ryukyu Kingdom,» trading with China and Southeast Asia and developing a distinct culture symbolized by Shurijo Castle (UNESCO-listed in 2000 and rebuilding after the 2019 main hall fire). With emerald seas, the uplifted coral cliffs of Manzamo and Cape Zanpa, Kouri Island connected by sea bridge, the world-class Churaumi Aquarium, and the «Yachimun no Sato» pottery village, the island fuses tropical nature with a singular indigenous culture.

Highlights

  • Shurijo Castle Ruins — the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom from 1429, UNESCO-listed; the main hall is being rebuilt after the 2019 fire (scheduled completion 2026), and the Shureimon gate is fully restored
  • Manzamo Cliff — uplifted coral with a «Trunk of an Elephant» natural arch, a renowned sunset spot facing the East China Sea
  • Kouri Bridge and Kouri Island — a 1,960 m sea-spanning bridge above emerald-blue water, with the «Heart Rock» drawing romantic photography
  • Churaumi Aquarium — one of the world's largest acrylic tanks (8.2 m × 22.5 m) showcasing whale sharks and giant manta rays
  • Yachimun no Sato (Yomitan) — a pottery village dotted with 19 kilns; climbing kilns, workshops, and traditional Ryukyu ceramics

Quick Answers

What is Okinawa Main Island?
The heart of Okinawa Prefecture — a 106 km long subtropical island. From 1429 to 1879 it was the independent «Ryukyu Kingdom,» whose distinctive culture is symbolized by Shurijo Castle. With Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, Churaumi Aquarium and more, it fuses tropical nature with Ryukyu heritage.
Suggested one-day shooting route on the main island?
Morning at Shurijo → noon at Manzamo and Cape Zanpa → sunset at Kouri Bridge and Beach → night on Kokusai-dori. A car is essential for the north; given the distances, focus on either south or north for efficiency.
Best season and access?
May to September for sea and sky (peak July–August; watch typhoons in September). October and April best avoid crowds. From Naha Airport, central Naha is 20 min by car; the northern Churaumi Aquarium is about 2 hours.
Status of Shurijo Castle reconstruction?
The October 2019 fire destroyed the Seiden, Hokuden, and Nanden. Reconstruction is underway, with the Seiden scheduled for autumn 2026 completion. The «visible recovery» policy allows visitors to observe and photograph the work — a rare chance to record traditional techniques as World Heritage craftsmanship. The Shureimon and Shirokane Hall remain standing and shootable.
Photographing Churaumi Aquarium?
The Kuroshio main tank (8.2 m × 22.5 m) housing whale sharks is shot through glass. A fast prime (50mm f/1.8) blurs the background; ISO 1600–3200 freezes motion. No flash. The Coral Reef zone is rich in color. Right at 9 AM opening avoids crowds — 4.2 million annual visitors make it Okinawa's most popular site.
Photographing Ryukyu culture?
①Shurijo + Shureimon (symbol of Ryukyu architecture) ②Naha Public Daiichi Makishi Market (Okinawan ingredients) ③Kokusai-dori (night yatai and Ryukyu cuisine) ④Yachimun no Sato (traditional pottery, climbing kilns) ⑤Shisa (lion-dog statues on every roof) ⑥Bingata and Bashofu (traditional textiles) ⑦Eisa (summer traditional dance). One to two days can capture both culture and nature.
