The Komatsunagi Cherry Tree Under the Stars: A 400-Year-Old Solitary Sakura in Achi Village

«Komatsunagi-no-Sakura,» a 400+ year-old Edohigan cherry tree, stands alone beside terraced rice paddies in the mountain hamlet of Chisato, Achi Village, Nagano. Legend has it that Minamoto no Yoshitsune tethered his horse here on his way to Oshu — hence the name «horse-tying cherry.» Its solitary stance carries the dignity of an old warrior.

Peak bloom is mid-to-late April. At about 700 m elevation in a mountain valley, it blooms 1–2 weeks later than the lowlands. This is also when the paddies are flooded for planting — creating the miraculous composition of cherry tree and stars mirrored in still water. This «mirror-pond solitary cherry» frame is one of the rarest in the world.

Three conditions must align: (1) new moon (any moonlight washes out the stars); (2) no wind (preserve the mirror); (3) cloudless skies. Such combinations occur only a few nights a year — check local SNS and weather daily.

Technique: «brightness blending» of two exposures is the classic approach. A single camera cannot expose both the dark cherry tree and bright stars correctly, so: (1) expose for tree and paddy reflection (foreground); (2) expose for stars (background); (3) blend in Photoshop. A single-frame alternative: ISO 3200, f/2.8, 15 s, with a soft warm-toned LED faintly illuminating the tree.

Gear: wide-angle lens (14–24 mm or 16–35 mm f/2.8), solid tripod, light-painting LED (low output, warm filter), and remote shutter. Bring serious cold-weather layers and warmers. There are no toilets nearby — the village center is 30+ minutes away.

Notes: parking holds only a few cars; many photographers stake spots from late evening. This is local farmland — never step into the paddies, keep lights to a minimum, and shoot quietly out of respect.
