Pont d'Onaruto

Tokushima· Onaruto Bridge

Onaruto Bridge is a 1,629 m suspension bridge with 144 m towers connecting Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture to Minamiawaji City in Hyogo Prefecture (Awaji Island). Opened in 1985 as part of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project's Kobe-Naruto route, it spans the narrowest section of the Naruto Strait (about 1.3 km wide), beneath which whirlpools up to 20 m across — one of the world's three great tidal currents — form. On the Tokushima side, beneath the bridge, the 450 m «Uzu-no-Michi» promenade (one level down, 45 m above the sea) lets visitors look directly down through glass floors at whirlpools — a rare experience even by Japanese standards. The bridge's graceful curves combined with the strait and Awaji Island make for the Inland Sea's most dramatic scenery.

Highlights

  • Onaruto Bridge itself — 1,629 m total length, 144 m towers; the elegant suspension curves are best framed from the Awaji side
  • Uzu-no-Michi — the 450 m walkway beneath the bridge, 45 m above the sea, with glass floors offering direct views down to the whirlpools
  • Naruto Park and Senjojiki Observatory — a viewing hub close to the bridge; cherry blossoms paired with the bridge make a stunning spring scene
  • Michi-no-Eki Uzushio (Awaji side) — a sweeping overlook of the bridge, with sunset igniting bridge and strait in vivid contrast
  • Naruto Skyline — a scenic drive route with multiple observatories overlooking the bridge; especially exquisite at blue hour

Quick Answers

What is the Onaruto Bridge?
A 1,629 m suspension bridge with 144 m towers connecting Naruto in Tokushima to Awaji Island, opened in 1985. It spans the Naruto Strait — one of the world's three great tidal currents — and the «Uzu-no-Michi» walkway beneath (45 m above the sea) lets you look through a glass floor at the whirlpools below — a globally rare experience.
Best spot to shoot the bridge?
For a sweeping overhead view, Michi-no-Eki Uzushio on Awaji side is best. The bridge and strait glowing at sunset are beautiful. From the Tokushima side, Naruto Park and Senjojiki Observatory put you close to the bridge; cherry blossoms paired with the bridge create a stunning spring scene.
How do I access Uzu-no-Michi?
From JR Naruto Station, take a bus to «Naruto Park» and walk 5 minutes. Hours 9:00–18:00 (summer); admission ¥520. Whirlpools peak around spring tides (near new and full moons in spring and autumn), strongest about 1–2 hours before/after high or low tide.
Toll for crossing by car?
As part of the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, Awaji-Minami IC to Naruto-Kita IC costs ¥1,140 for standard cars (¥860 with ETC). From Honshu, drivers cross the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge (Kobe→Awaji) then the Onaruto Bridge (Awaji→Tokushima) — a great two-bridge expressway run. Buses use the same route to link Honshu and Shikoku.
Recommended camera gear?
①Wide angle (16–35mm) for bridge + strait grand vista ②Telephoto 70–200mm for tower details and the geometry of the suspension cables ③ND filter (slow shutter for surface and cloud motion). Sea winds are strong — bring a heavy tripod or windbreak stones. A protective lens filter helps against salt spray.
Comparison with the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge?
The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge (Kobe–Awaji, opened 1998) is among the world's longest suspension bridges (central span 1,991 m). Onaruto (1985) is its predecessor, with an 876 m central span. Both share Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority design language — sharp lines, functional beauty. Akashi wins on scale; Onaruto wins on the unique «Uzu-no-Michi» walkway. Bridge enthusiasts should photograph both.
