Japan's clearest waters. Polarizing filters, timing, and the trade-offs between aerial and ground perspectives.

Capturing Miyako Blue: Yonaha Maehama and the 3,540 m Irabu Bridge

Miyakojima in Okinawa is famed for the «Miyako Blue» — a gradient from emerald green to deep blue across these subtropical waters. Visibility reaches 40 m, among the clearest in Japan; on sunny days you can see corals on the seafloor.

【Top 5 spots】(1) Yonaha Maehama: Japan's #1 white-sand beach, a 7 km expanse, classic with Kurima Bridge in frame. (2) Irabu Bridge: Japan's longest toll-free bridge at 3,540 m, connecting the main island to Irabu — shoot from on the bridge or from the opposite shore. (3) Sunayama Beach: famous natural rock arch, sunset framing through it. (4) Ikema Bridge: 2 km span to Ikema Island, parking spots on the bridge offer epic views. (5) Higashi Hennazaki: the eastern cape, cliffs, lighthouse, and Pacific overlook.

【Best season】Late June through mid-September, with peak water clarity in July–August. Watch for typhoons in September. Winter (December–February) waters are still beautiful, but weaker sunlight halves the «Miyako Blue» saturation.

【Timing】Sun-high hours (10:00–14:00) yield the most vivid sea — light penetrates to the seafloor, maximizing emerald color. Early morning and evening tone things down, ideal for bridge or beach silhouettes.

【Techniques】(1) CPL filter is mandatory (kills sea-surface glare, reveals the seafloor); (2) exposure compensation +0.3 to +1 (white sand fools the meter); (3) telephoto compression (the Sunayama arch); (4) drones thrive here (few restricted zones, beach shooting allowed).

【Gear】Wide-to-standard zoom (16–70 mm) plus telephoto (70–200 mm) plus CPL plus ND (ND filters enable daytime long exposures of bridges, capturing wave motion). Sun protection and hydration are essential. A rental car is mandatory — public transit is sparse.
