Japan's No.1 Starry Sky in Achi Village: Stargazing Photography at 1,400 m «Tenku no Rakuen»

In 2006 Japan's Ministry of the Environment designated Achi Village in Nagano as the country's No.1 location for «the brightest visible stars.» Fujimidai Highlands, at 1,400 m elevation and surrounded by mountains shielding it from urban light, holds one of Japan's darkest skies.

The most reliable approach is the «Star Village Achi» Night Tour (Tenku no Rakuen). The Fujimidai Highland Ropeway carries visitors to the summit station, where during designated lights-out hours the experience of a fully dark sky filled with stars is unforgettable (April–November regular tours; December–March winter tours). Tickets run roughly ¥3,500–¥4,500; peak nights sell out a month in advance.

Two top seasons: (1) Summer (June–August): the dense Milky Way core (Sagittarius direction) crosses the zenith around 22:00 — overwhelming. (2) Winter (December–February): air transparency peaks; while the galactic core fades, Orion, the Winter Triangle, and the Pleiades render sharply. Snow-covered ground in winter adds a reflective brightness that feels otherworldly.

New moon is mandatory. Use a moon-phase calendar and target clear nights within ±3 days of new moon. Moonlight at any phase washes out the Milky Way regardless of ISO.

Gear: wide lens (14–24 mm f/2.8 or 20 mm prime), solid tripod, remote shutter. Manual settings: ISO 3200–6400, f/2.8, 15–25 s exposure (500 rule), white balance 3500–4000 K. Always shoot RAW and recover Milky Way detail in post.

Tips: (1) red-LED headlamp mode preserves dark adaptation; (2) lens heaters prevent dew; (3) keep spare camera batteries in inner pockets. Outside the night tour, decent shooting is possible near the village center «michi-no-eki,» but the ropeway summit is dramatically darker.
