بحيرة سووا
Lake Suwa, in central Nagano Prefecture spanning Suwa City, Okaya City, and Shimo-Suwa Town, is the prefecture's largest lake at 13.3 km² with a 16 km perimeter, a maximum depth of 7.6 m, and a surface elevation of 759 m. Formed by Fossa Magna tectonic movement about a million years ago, it is a graben (structural) lake with 31 inflowing rivers and only one outflow — the Tenryu River. At 759 m elevation, it is Japan's second-highest highland lake (after Lake Yamanaka at 980 m at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji). When the entire surface freezes during severe winters (about 10 times in the past 30 years), thermal expansion produces cracks that rise into ridges — the famous «Omiwatari» phenomenon, recorded as a Suwa Taisha shrine ritual for some 700 years. The Lake Suwa Fireworks Festival (August 15, 40,000 shells — one of Japan's largest), the lake's role as inspiration for Makoto Shinkai's film «Your Name,» and its panoramic views all make it Nagano's representative photographic destination.
